Each year, communities across the country and our team at TSS, commemorate Red Ribbon Week October 23rd – 31st.

The mission of this annual campaign is to help kids stay drug-free, so they can be the best they can be now and into the future. Keep in mind, that research overwhelmingly shows that young people who refrain from substance use are less likely to grow into adults with substance abuse problems.

This year’s Red Ribbon Week theme is “Life is A Movie, Film Drug Free,™” to spotlight stories of youth choosing to live drug-free. Throughout the week, campaign participants are encouraged to share video clips about making this choice here.

You can also support the week by visiting redribbon.org and participating in or hosting fun activities and games to inspire our youth. Or, become a virtual ambassador by taking the Red Ribbon Week pledge and posting information about staying drug-free on social media. Learn more here.

Red Ribbon Week began as a way to honor Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, a Drug Enforcement Administration agent, who was tortured and killed in Mexico in the line of duty in 1985. Friends, relatives, and neighbors of Camarena began to wear red ribbons in his memory. Parents eventually formed coalitions, using the red ribbon as a symbol of honor. Today, Red Ribbon Week is all about educating youth about the dangers of drug abuse and encouraging children to engage in drug prevention activities.

As always, TSS will partner on education initiatives with local schools during the week. We will also be decorating our offices and holding our annual Red Ribbon Week pumpkin decorating contest. Our team will also be handing out informational pamphlets, red ribbons, coloring sheets and stickers. Come by with your kids to join in the fun and learn about the value of choosing a drug-free life.
