While motorcycles make up just 3% of all registered vehicles in the United States, they account for 15% of traffic fatalities, making them more dangerous to ride than regular passenger vehicles. In 2024, 6,218 motorcyclists were killed in accidents, and most of these accidents involved another vehicle.
Certainly, it is the duty of both the motorcyclist and truck and automobile drivers to be safe on the road and look out for each other and we’ve frequently shared safety tips for motorcyclists. (See our 2024 article here.) But there are also precautions vehicle drivers should be mindful of during the spring and summer months when motorcycles are out in force. Let’s look at how all of us can be mindful and safe when sharing the road with motorcyclists:
- Like in any other driving situation, be alert and avoid distractions.
- Share the road. Realize that motorcycles have the same rights as all others on the roadway.
- Allow motorcycles full lane width.
- Be especially cautious when turning in front of motorcycles.
- Motorcycles have a smaller profile than vehicles – it may be difficult to judge their speed and distance.
- Always signal before making lane changes.
- Actively check your blind spots before making any lane changes. This means physically turning your head to ensure the path is clear.
- Be aware that turn signals on motorcycles are not self-cancelling. Wait to make sure the cycle is turning before you proceed, in case the operator simply forgot to turn off their turn signal.
- Pay attention. Motorcyclists may adjust their speed suddenly to deal with road conditions that wouldn’t impact a car or truck.
- Exercise extra caution at intersections. One of the most common causes of motorcycle accidents occurs when a driver fails to spot a rider at a left-hand turn.
- When driving behind a motorcycle, maintain a safe following distance, allowing at least a 4-second distance between your vehicle and the motorcycle.
- Be aware that weather conditions can have a significant impact on motorcycle riders, who may find it challenging to maneuver and keep control in rain or high winds. Be cautious and give them space.
